Chronic conditions (such as cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, Parkinson disease, mental health disorders, etc) are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the world (WHO 2014). In Australia, more than one-third of the population reported having at least one chronic condition. Chronic conditions account for 90% of all deaths and pose the biggest health challenge (AIHW 2011).

Yet, chronic conditions are preventable. It is estimated that at least 80% of all heart disease, stroke and diabetes cases and 40% of all cancers can be prevented through behavioural interventions as many chronic conditions share common behavioural risk factors including physical inactivity (WHO 2014).

Clinical Tai Chi 350x213Well over thirty randomised control trials demonstrated that Tai Chi significantly improved a wide range of clinical parameters of chronic diseases including physical functions, overall health and well-being and quality of life for chronic condition patients. 27 out of 32 randomized control trials were based on Yang Style Tai Chi, which is the style for the Clinical Tai Chi for Chronic Condition Rehabilitation and Management Program.

Based on mounting research evidence and guided by exercise prescription principles and safety guidelines, the Clinical Tai Chi for Chronic Condition Rehabilitation and Management Program is a safe, targeted and innovative Tai Chi intervention program for rehabilitation and management of chronic conditions in healthcare and community settings. Incorporating key Tai Chi intervention techniques with proven clinical benefits and adapted for chronic condition patients, the Clinical Tai Chi for Chronic Condition Rehabilitation and Management Program is designed as a non-pharmacological therapy to alleviate symptoms, facilitate recovery, regain functional abilities, and improve overall health, wellbeing and quality of life for patients with chronic conditions.

Chronic Tai Chi lecture 350x213The Clinical Tai Chi for Chronic Condition Rehabilitation and Management Program contains both chair-based and standing modules designed for chronic condition patients with all levels of balance and mobility.

The 2-day training course for the Tai Chi for Chronic Condition Rehabilitation and Management Program involves step-by-step teaching and practice of the program as well as a theoretical component on research evidence underpinning the program. The course is ideal for physiotherapists, occupational therapists, exercise physiologists, physical activity professionals including fitness trainers, Tai Chi instructors and other health practitioners involved in prevention, rehabilitation and management of chronic conditions in healthcare and community settings.
