Australia International Exercise Medicine Health Institute Accreditation Program (17 CPDs)
Chronic conditions (such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, Parkinson disease, mental health disorders, etc) are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the world (WHO 2014). In Australia, more than one-third of the population reported having at least one chronic condition. Chronic conditions account for 90% of all deaths and pose the biggest health challenge (AIHW 2011). Yet, chronic conditions are preventable. It is estimated that at least 80% of all heart disease, stroke and diabetes cases and 40% of all cancers can be prevented through behavioural interventions as many chronic conditions share common behavioural risk factors including physical inactivity (WHO 2014). Well over thirty randomised control trials demonstrated that Tai Chi significantly improved a wide range of clinical parameters of chronic conditions including physical functions, overall health and well-being, and quality of life for chronic condition patients. 27 out of 32 randomized control trials were based on Yang Style Tai Chi, which is the style for the Clinical Tai Chi for Chronic Condition Rehabilitation and Management Program. |
